Dermabrasion vs. Microdermabrasion, Side Effects, & Cost

    Dermabrasion vs. Microdermabrasion

Dermabrasion involves using an abrasive to injure targeted areas on the skin in a controlled manner. The treatment works well in reversing the signs of aging and reducing scars. Your plastic surgeon will recommend dermabrasion mostly for the face. However, the treatment can be used on other body parts as well. It is important that you get this plastic surgery performed by trained and qualified professionals.

Microdermabrasion is a type of skin rejuvenation technique. It uses abrasions and vacuum suction to remove the most superficial layer of face or other areas. Anesthesia is not required in microdermabrasion unlike dermabrasion. The abrasive tool does not penetrate till deep skin layers making microdermabrasion a non-invasive and painless procedure.

Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Gary Motykie provides dermabrasion and microdermabrasion treatments to patients in Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Los Angeles, and surrounding locations.

    Candidacy: Dermabrasion vs. Microdermabrasion

Dermabrasion involves deeper skin layers, which usually creates a wound. A new skin of better quality and consistency is formed when the wound heals. Your cosmetic surgeon will recommend this procedure when you want help with trauma or acne scars, tattoos, wrinkles, actinic keratosis (first phase of skin cancer), and red nose (rhinophyma).

Microdermabrasion only involves the topmost skin layer, called the stratum corneum. This layer is made of dead skin cells and is safe to remove in most people. Deeper skin layers are not touched making it ideal for all patients. However, people with skin diseases, such as acne should not get this procedure done.

    What Does the Procedure Involve?

Dermabrasion needs local anesthesia since a wound is created. Plastic surgeon may offer to administer a sedative intravenously in some cases. The surgeon will apply an abrasive device to your skin once the skin is numb. This device comprises of a rotating wire wheel or brush encrusted with an abrasive screen or diamonds.

In microdermabrasion, the surgeon will spray an inert crystalline material on your skin. They will use a wand impregnated with crystals to forcefully rub the superficial skin layer. This exfoliation does not affect the deeper layers. You may notice mild swelling or inflammation, which is temporary.

    Expectations after Dermabrasion and Microdermabrasion

Dermabrasion creates a wound, which needs to be kept clean and moist. Your cosmetic surgeon may call you in for gentle removal of debris and crust after 24 – 48 hours as part of the postoperative consultation. You will need to apply petroleum jelly to the wound for at least 10 days. Redness will reduce after 3 – 6 weeks.

There is no post-operative procedure in case of microdermabrasion since it does not result in a wound. You may experience mild swelling and redness though. There may be a slight decrease in wrinkles in the short term because of swelling.

Infections can occur as with any other plastic surgery, which are treated with antibiotics. Darkly pigmented patients may experience undesirable color. Hypertrophic scars or keloids may occur if you have a genetic predisposition.

Dermabrasion is a safe and established procedure that involves removal of outer skin layers to treat aged skin and conspicuous scars. The procedure is can help you get rid of fine lines, acne scars, uneven skin texture, and sun damaged skin. The technique requires a special rotating instrument to be used on the face.

Your plastic surgeon may numb the area using a local anesthetic before starting to minimize discomfort. Dermabrasion is an outpatient treatment. You will be allowed to go home right after the procedure is done. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Gary Motykie provides dermabrasion treatment to patients in Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Los Angeles, and surrounding communities.

What Does the Dermabrasion Procedure Involve?

Dermabrasion is usually performed under local anesthesia. However, your cosmetic surgeon may use general anesthesia or offer a sedative if you require extensive treatment. The surgeon’s assistant will stretch your skin and hold it tight. The dermabrader device, which has a rough surface, will be moved by the expert on the stretched skin.

Small-tipped dermabraders are used on mouth corners and other narrow skin areas. Circular dermabraders are preferred by surgeons on larger skin patches. You may need multiple sessions for treating larger areas.

Once the procedure is complete, the surgeon will cover the treated area with a moist dressing. They will change the dressing the following day. This is when you would be taught to change your own dressings.

    What Follows the Procedure?

Your plastic surgeon will give you detailed instructions on dressing the treated area. They will also recommend the skin care products you should use. You will notice pinkness on the treated area for a few weeks. Many patients experience swelling as well along with a burning or tingling sensation. It takes about 10 – 12 weeks for the pink color to completely fade away.

What Is Breast Augmentation Mastopexy (BAM)?

    Breast Augmentation Mastopexy (BAM)

Breast skin can easily become loose after pregnancy or due to aging. However, there are several other reasons for loose breast skin, such as reduction in breast volume. This can cause deflated or sagging breasts, which may require a Breast augmentation mastopexy (BAM) to improve the condition. BAM is a combination of two procedures in a single surgery – breast lift and breast augmentation.

The plastic surgery can go a long way in restoring your youthful upper body appearance while addressing any issues you may have regarding shape, size, and appearance of your breasts. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Gary Motykie provides breast augmentation mastopexy to patients in Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Los Angeles, and surrounding locations.

Benefits of Breast Augmentation Mastopexy (BAM)

Breast augmentation mastopexy surgery can fully restore the appearance of your breasts. Your plastic surgeon shall tighten the breast muscles for a perkier appearance while repositioning the breasts for a more youthful and elevated appearance. The procedure is highly beneficial from both cosmetic and reconstructive standpoint.

You can enjoy fuller breasts with a projecting image after this surgery. The surgery ensures that your breasts don’t have a sagging or scooped out look. Breast augmentation mastopexy procedure can address the following key concerns:

    • Droopy or hanging breasts
    • Asymmetrical breasts
    • Loss of breast volume in the upper portion
    • Loss of breast shape
    • Stretch marks or creases on the breasts

    Breast Augmentation Mastopexy Surgical Procedure

Breast augmentation mastopexy procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia. Your cosmetic surgeon will create discreet incisions on your breasts. This can be under the breast crease or around the areolas. Breast implants will be inserted through these incisions. They are usually placed right under the pectoral muscles.

The surgeon will also excise any loose tissue or skin from the area and bring the tissues closer. This will cause your breasts to have a lifted appearance and to settle at a higher position. Breast augmentation mastopexy allows for improving breast projection as well as breast volume. The best part about this procedure is that you will have less scarring since you are addressing multiple breast aesthetic issues with the same procedure.

Typically, crescent incisions are used by surgeons. However, if your breasts are heavily sagging, the surgeon may need to use a lollipop incision.

    Cleavage Enhancement during BAM

Some women prefer getting optional procedures done, such as cleavage enhancement during Breast augmentation mastopexy. The shape, type, and size of the implants will be based on your anatomical demands and aesthetic needs. Make sure you discuss your goals and expectations during the pre-op consultation with your surgeon.

    Downtime and Recovery

Recovery time after getting a Breast augmentation mastopexy is no different from the time taken after breast augmentation plastic surgery or breast lift. You should be able to return to work after 1 – 2 weeks of the surgery. However, most surgeons recommend performing only low-intensive work for the first few weeks.

Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Gary Motykie receives patients from Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Los Angeles, and nearby areas for breast augmentation mastopexy.
