How Do I Know If One Of My Breast Implants Is Encapsulated?

How Do I Know If One Of My Breast Implants Is Encapsulated?Capsular contracture is a less common but serious complication resulting from breast augmentation. When a breast implant becomes encapsulated, it must be removed or replaced to prevent serious health conditions from arising. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Gary Motykie provides treatment of encapsulated breast implants to patients in Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Los Angeles, and surrounding locations.

How Do I Know If I Have a Capsular Contracture?

Capsular contracture can occur from breast augmentation using either saline or silicone breast implants but is more common with silicone. After surgery, the body naturally forms a capsule of scar tissue around the breast implant in response to the foreign body. Normally, the scar tissue remains soft and flexible, but sometimes it may harden and constrict around the breast implant, causing capsular contracture. This condition can occur at any point after surgery and is sometimes not noticed by the patient until several months or years later. Indications of an encapsulated breast implant include pain, hardening or firmness, deformed shape, or the breasts sitting higher than usual.

    Capsular Contracture Grades

There are four grades of capsular contracture, each of which may require extra attention and treatment. A physical exam will be needed to determine how severe contracture is occurring.

Grade I: The breasts look and feel normal and do not require treatment

Grade II: The breasts feel slightly firm, massage or prescription medications may be recommended for treatment

Grade III: The breasts feel firm and look deformed. Surgical intervention is required.

Grade IV: The breasts feel firm, look deformed, and are causing pain. Surgical intervention is required.
