Establishing Placement Options
People can get breast augmentation surgery for any number of reasons, like increasing the size, shape, and fullness of their breasts, boosting their confidence, improving their sense of femininity, and so much more. Beyond researching the benefits of breast augmentation and finding a qualified plastic surgeon, such as Dr. Gary Motykie at Gary Motykie, MD, in Beverly Hills, there’s much more to the decision-making process. For example, choosing which placement technique to use for the implants can make a big difference in your recovery and the final results. Keep reading to learn about the similarities and differences between subfascial and dual plane breast augmentation.
Between the Fascia and Chest Muscle: Subfascial Placement
Subfascial placement involves placing longer needles under the pectoral fascia and above the chest muscle. Women who want a natural look, are active athletes, or bodybuilders, and/or want to avoid pectoral distortion when flexing are typically the best candidates for this technique. Additionally, these candidates should have enough soft tissue for good coverage and support of the implant.
Since the subfascial technique places the implant above the muscle, it avoids cutting through or lifting the pectoralis major. That way, the muscle integrity is preserved, resulting in less pain, a quicker recovery, and no muscle animation deformity, a side effect where implants distort or shift upward or outward when the pectoralis muscles flex.
Another advantage of subfascial placement is stable positioning, as the fascia provides a supportive “hammock” that helps keep the implant in place, minimizing risks such as bottoming out or shifting compared with other techniques.
It’s important to note that subfascial placement has a higher risk of ripping and implant visibility, especially for patients who are thinner or have less natural breast tissue, because there is less fascia and breast tissue to hide under. It can also have a higher risk of capsular contracture.
Diving Into Dual Plane Placement
Dual-plane placement involves placing the upper part of the implant below the chest muscle, with the lower part resting over the muscle behind the breast gland. This placement technique is known for its ability to achieve a natural-looking slope and position for beautiful, enhanced breast contours. Additionally, you’ll benefit from a fuller appearance with some lift while avoiding the risk of implants appearing too high on the chest.
Dual-plane placement is also known for its versatility, enabling a more customized approach. Its versatility allows for an array of implant shapes and sizes, so patients with different preferences can still benefit from this technique.
Another advantage of dual plane placement is the reduced risk of implant rippling. Even if there were folds, wrinkles, or edges on the implants, they would be concealed because the chest muscle partially covers the implant. This creates more natural-looking results, particularly for people who do not have as much natural breast tissue to cover the implant.
Though there are several advantages to dual-plane placement, this technique does involve more downtime than subfascial placement and carries a risk of animation deformity when you contract your chest muscles.
Review What Matters Most
There is a lot to consider when choosing which breast augmentation implant technique to get. When you have your consultation with Gary Motykie, MD, in Beverly Hills, we’ll talk through all of your questions, concerns, goals, expectations, and each technique in greater detail so that you can make an informed decision. If you want a faster recovery with no animation deformity, subfascial placement is probably the better decision. If you have a slimmer frame and less breast tissue, and want a natural-looking slope with more coverage and reduced risk of rippling and capsular contracture, dual-plane placement might be a better option.
Your goals, breast structure, preferences, and safety are our top priority, so you can feel confident about making the choice for your personal desires rather than being influenced or pressured by anyone else.
