Introduction to Neck Lift

Due to aging, weight gain, or simply heredity, some people notice that their necks are getting “heavy” and losing their youthful, sculpted contour. As this condition worsens, some people begin to notice sagging skin in the neck and the development of fullness underneath the chin (i.e., “double chin”). At this point, many people begin to become very unhappy with the appearance of their neck in the side (profile) view in photographs because it makes them appear older and overweight. Dr. Gary Motykie, in West Hollywood, CA, routinely performs neck lift surgery for patients looking to achieve a long-lasting and more slender facial appearance.

What is a Neck Lift?

A neck lift can create a more angular and/or “sculpted” neck without making the neck look unnatural or strange. This procedure is particularly effective in improving male patients’ self-confidence and youthful appearance since the small scar is inconspicuous, and the results are impressive and long-lasting. Women can also expect dramatic results from surgery that are intended to produce a longer, more elegant neckline that creates a more youthful and healthier appearance.

A number of anatomic factors can cause fullness in the neck and a resulting loss of a youthful neck contour, including an accumulation of fat, excessive loose skin, muscle “banding,” and/or a “short” neck. Therefore, the proper procedure to reverse the aging of the neck is based upon which anatomic factors need to be corrected.

  • If excessive skin is the only problem, depending on the actual amount of loose skin, a radiofrequency skin tightening procedure or a facelift may be necessary.
  • If the problem is related to an excess accumulation of neck fat (“the double chin”), the fat can be removed via liposuction alone to achieve a more sculpted neckline.
  • The “turkey gobbler” deformity is often due to excess skin and redundant neck muscles that appear as “bands” in the midline. In these cases, a necklace procedure can dramatically improve the neck’s appearance by removing excess fat and tightening the neck muscles in a corset fashion.

What Are the Benefits of a Neck Lift?

Patients in Beverly Hills looking to improve their neckline have found their surgery provides them with the following benefits:

  • Creates a more distinct jawline contour
  • Reduces a wrinkly, saggy skin appearance
  • Produces dramatic, long-lasting results
  • Minimal scarring

Who Are the Best Candidates For a Neck Lift?

The best candidates for a Beverly Hills neck lift typically include:

  • Possess good skin elasticity with minimal sagging
  • Patients with excess fat in the neck area who wish to improve their profile
  • Are in good overall health
  • Have no serious medical conditions that could complicate surgery

Your NeckLift Journey with Dr. GARY MOTYKIE

What’s the First Step?

When you come in for a consultation in West Hollywood, Dr. Motykie will address your desires for neck lift surgery and give you a clearer understanding of how the surgery may best meet your needs and expectations. You will also be able to ask him any questions you may have about neck lift surgery and its possible benefits in your particular case. It is wise to come with questions written down and have a general understanding of the overall procedure so you can be prepared to learn as much as possible during your visit with Dr. Motykie.

Dr. Motykie may have you look through numerous photographs of different surgical results to help you determine what type of look you personally find attractive and which technique may best help you achieve your desired outcome from surgery. You are also encouraged to bring in photographs you may have obtained on your own from magazines or various internet websites that show the desired “look” you would like to achieve from surgery. Dr. Motykie has found that looking through these types of photographs and reviewing his personal surgery portfolio helps him achieve his desired outcome from surgery.

Dr. Motykie will also photograph your face and neck using his state-of-the-art imaging system to show you what a neck lift procedure can do. You should leave your consultation with a preliminary game plan for your surgery.

What to Expect on the Day of Neck Lift Surgery

On the day of your neck lift surgery in West Hollywood, you will arrive at our AAAASF-accredited surgical facility. Once checked in, you may have a secondary pre-operative consultation with Dr. Motykie, who will review your surgery with you. This is a good time to ask any last-minute questions or clarify any concerns you might have about the procedure or recovery. You will then have an intravenous (IV) line may be placed in your arm to administer fluids and medications, including anesthesia.

Depending on the complexity of your neck lift and your personal preferences, you may receive general anesthesia, which will put you completely to sleep.

Dr. Motykie will begin by making strategic incisions, typically hidden under the chin or behind the ears, which will strategically hide any scarring. Depending on what was discussed during your consultation, Dr. Motykie can utilize various techniques, such as liposuction to remove excess fat, tightening the underlying muscles to improve neck contour, and/or removing sagging skin for a more youthful appearance, working carefully to achieve the best possible results tailored to your anatomy.

Once the surgery is complete, you will be transferred to our recovery room, where medical staff will monitor you as you wake up from anesthesia. The surgical procedure itself typically lasts between one to three hours, depending on the specific techniques used and whether any additional procedures are being performed.

Neck Lift Recovery

Before you leave, we will provide your caretaker detailed post-operative care instructions covering how to care for your incisions, manage discomfort, and follow any activity restrictions. Adhering to these guidelines is important to ensure a smooth recovery. You will also need to arrange for someone to drive you home, as you won’t be able to drive yourself after the anesthesia.

In the days following the procedure, you can expect some swelling, bruising, and discomfort, which is completely normal. Dr. Motykie will prescribe you temporary pain relief medications to help manage any discomfort you might experience. You may also be fitted with a compression garment to help support healing and provide additional protection. We advise you to rest and limit any physical activity for the first few weeks, with the exception of some light walking to prevent blood clotting.

It’s common to have follow-up appointments to monitor your progress and ensure proper healing. As the weeks go by, swelling will gradually subside, and you’ll start to see the results of your procedure. Full recovery can take several months, during which it’s important to follow your surgeon’s aftercare instructions closely to optimize your results and minimize the risk of complications. Patience is key, as the final outcome may not be fully visible until the healing process is complete.
