Whether or not health insurance will cover a rhinoplasty depends on the type of rhinoplasty needed by the patient, and the patient’s insurance provider. Health insurance typically does not cover the cost of a nose job if the patient’s primary reason for rhinoplasty is cosmetic. What is the difference between a cosmetic or functional rhinoplasty?

For most patients, rhinoplasty is a cosmetic procedure to help improve the shape and appearance of the nose for aesthetic purposes. However, some patients, such as those with a deviated septum or that have suffered an injury to the nose, require a “functional” rhinoplasty to improve breathing. Patients with a birth deformity of the nose or chronic allergies may also seek rhinoplasty to alleviate breathing issues. A functional rhinoplasty for these reasons may be covered by insurance, depending on the provider.

How do I find out if my insurance would cover my rhinoplasty?

Cosmetic rhinoplasty is considered an elective surgery and is generally not covered by health insurance. If there is a medical reason that you require rhinoplasty surgery, such as to improve your breathing, it is possible that your insurance may cover or reimburse the cost of the procedure.
